VIRGINIA LOOKOUTS
WHITE ROCK
Lee County
July 16, 1938: "A 66-foot lookout tower has recently been constructed on Cumberland Mountain, just north of Ewing, and just west of the 'White Rocks.' It is a complete wooden tower, pre-fabricated, and assembled according to blue prints. The work was done by the local branch of the U.S. Forestry Service, in co-operation with the T.V.A., according to Mr. Houser, head of the Forestry division, and Mr. Powell, project Superintendent of the Jonesville CCC camp. The tower is the property of the State of Virginia, and a man will be appointed by the state to serve as lookout for forest fires.
On top of the tower is an 8 by 8 foot cabin, from which the surrounding area of about 20 miles radius, will be visible on clear days. The location of the tower is on the highest point of the mountain, being several feet higher than the Pinnacle.
A good mountain trail was built several months ago by the CCC camp, in preparation for the building of this lookout tower, and it is hoped that the road may eventually be improved still further. The building of a telephone line to the tower is under consideration, but so far nothing definite has been done toward this.
The site upon which the tower is built has been used for several years, in making the geodetic surveys of the U.S., and the signal lights were visible at distant points in Kentucky and Tennessee and on a high knob near Gate City, Va." (Middlesboro Daily News
