HEBRON
Cheboygan County
June 17, 1926: "The material for the erection of another fire tower in the county has arrived from the State Conservation Department and is being taken out to the Frank Warner farm in Hebron township where it will be erected on a high hill. This will ,perhaps complete the tower system of the county, and on reasonable clear days every point in the county will be covered by the watchmen in these towers and a fire won't get much of a start before it is reported, but on smoky and foggy days the range of visibility is limited and the towers are of little account." (Cheboygan Democrat)
June 5, 1936: "Although consistently dependable over sight-distances only, the ultra short-wave radio set installed recently in the Hebron fire tower surprised Michigan's conservation authorities by reaching into California.
Frank Warner, the towerman in the Hebron lookout, was listening on a radio conservation between two towermen, supposedly somewhere in northern Michigan. When the message completed and the speakers signed off, he discovered they were federal forest rangers in the Santa Barbara region of California. He had made no attempt to break into the conservation.
The set at the Hebron tower and in the Bliss tower of Emmet county were designed by radio engineers of the Department of Conservation for intertower forest fire communications." (Clare Sentinel)
