NEW YORK LOOKOUTS
GALLIS HILL
Ulster County
March 27, 1928: "When the forest protectors opened the Fire Tower at gallows Hill in the town of Kingston, a few days ago for the season, they found a number of broken windows in the observatory that had evidently been shot out by hunters. The State Conservation Commission will impose a fine of $500 on the culprits if they can be detected." (The Kingston Daily Freeman)
July 26, 1939: "Observer M. Edison at the Gallis Hill fire tower reported a fire in the Stony Hollow section about 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Deputy Sheriff Ray Winne got a crew of ten men together and by 8 o'clock had the fire apparently under control. It broke out again about 10 o'clock last night and the fire fighters remained on duty all night keeping it under observation." (The Kingston Daily Freeman)
September 14, 1940: "G.F. Edson, observer at the Gallis Hill fire tower, not only observes fire conditions but also keeps close watch on the surroundings of his cabin. A three foot rattlesnake which now hangs from the fire tower is proof of his keen observation. The rattler bears nine rattles and is the first Mr. Edson has ever seen during eleven years service at the fire observation tower." (The Kingston Daily Freeman)
