September 3, 1932: "In addition to road work, there will be two new lookout towers constructed: one on Bald mountain on the county line between Nelson and Augusta counties. The Bald mountain structure will be a fifty-foot steel tower with a 7 x 7 observatory on top and with living quarters at the base." (The News Leader)

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1957 (JCC) THE STATION IS THE APEX OF THE ROOF OF THE LOOKOUT TOWER LOCATED ON BALD MOUNTAIN, A PROMINENT PEAK IN THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS, LOCATED ABOUT 8 MILES EAST OF STEELS TAVERN AND ABOUT 16 MILES SOUTH OF STAUNTON. IT IS A GLASS ENCLOSED ROOM SUPPORTED BY FOUR LEGS.
