April 13, 1939: "The Kiwanis Club held its weekly meeting at Smith Mountain Monday afternoon late, in lieu of its regular Tuesday noon luncheon, upon the dedication of the Fire Tower recently erected atop the mountain. A large number of visitors from the state at large were present, among them Col. Page S. Bunker, State Forester." (The Dadeville Record)
1981: The fire tower was decommissioned.
October 2011: The tower is undergoing a rebuilding, once completed the tower will become the centerpiece of a complex of walking trails with views overlooking Lake Martin.
June 2012: The restoration project has been completed and the tower opened to the public.
