HOUGHTON LAKE
Roscommon County - State Department of Conservation
1921: A steel tower was erected. (Biennial Report - The Department of Conservation)
September 13, 1935: "Approximately 2,300 persons have visited the Houghton Lake State fire tower so far this season and of that number 1,200 have climbed the tower and registered, reports Roy Knappa, towerman.
Among those who climbed the tower were residents of Glascow, Scotland, and Juneau, Alaska. Ohio registered the largest number of out-of-state visitors." (Oxford Leader)
October 8, 1937: "State fire towermen are expected to be courteous and accommodating to those who visit their lofty cabins, but rarely to 'bless' their visitors in a formal way.
Towerman Roy Knapp did this, however, when Earl Anderson of Flint and Stella Mack of Houghton Lake selected the Houghton Lake fire tower as the scene of their wedding. Knapp is a minister as well as a state fire towerman." (The Ironwood Times)
