MARYLAND LOOKOUTS
SIDELING
Washington County
September 26, 1930: "Included in the program of the State Forestry Department to build a dozen new fire towers throughout Maryland is one to be erected at Sideling Hill, this county. The building program will get under way during the next few weeks with the erection of the first tower at Springfield in Prince Georges county.
John R. Curry, assistant State Forester in charge of forest fire work, announced that each of the towers will cost between $1,500 to $2,000 with the funds to be raised through cooperation of residents and timber owners of the sections to be protected by each, no State appropriation being available for the work. The construction will continue through the next six years.
Practically all timber lands of the State will be protected when the program is completed, Curry said." (The Daily Mail)
