TENNESSEE LOOKOUTS
JAKES MOUNTAIN
Sequatchie County
January 3, 1926: "Jakes Mountain, in Van Buren county, is a knob which rises about 300 feet out of a general level of its surroundings on the Cumberland Plateau. This mountain will soon become the lookout point or place for the eye-piece to detect forest fires over broad and encircling stretches of forest land.
On the top of Jakes Mountain a lookout tower about seventy feet in height will be constructed and from this tower during the fire season in the spring and in the fall a man, called lookout man, will watch for fires and report them to the headquarters of the Rocky River Coal and Lumber Company, operating at Campaign. In order to obtain the proper connection, about 13 miles of telephone line will be constructed so that quick notice can be given to the fire crews for quick action if a fire is observed burning on the protected land."
