Jefferson National Forest
April 1940: "During September, enrollees of Camp F-21, under the supervision of Superintendent E.C. Hatcher, Foremen Humphreys and Shepherd and Engineer J.E. Junkin, began excavation for the erection of Bald Mountain Tower. However, due to inclement weather, the structure was not completed until April 20th.
This new tower is a 40' structure including a 15' x 14' wood cab and is located 12 miles North of Camp on Bald Mountain, an altitude of approximately 3500 feet.
The lookout man will live in the cab, approximately 40' from the ground, during spring and fall fire seasons. He will be able to keep a clear and constant watch over 40,000 acres, of which 30,000 acres is National Forest Land, in Craig, Alleghany and Botetourt counties." (Bob Cat - CCC Company 1368)
