NEW YORK LOOKOUTS
UTSAYANTHA MOUNTAIN
Delaware County
August 18, 1933: "The tower on Mt. Utsayantha, Stamford, is soon to have a new neighbor—a 60-foot steel tower—erected by the State Conservation Department.
The new tower will be located on a concrete base on the rise at the edge of the parking field and about 200 feet from the present tower. Steel for the structure will be conveyed to the mountain top by Conservation trucks and construction will be completed in September.
For three weeks a corps of 20 boys from Capt. Jepperson's Conservation Camp, near Davenport, have been trimming trees and brush and setting telephone poles along the 1 ½ – mile route from the 'saddle' to the mountain-top. This is necessary so that the fire observer, who eventually will be established there during the period when fire hazards are greatest, may, through the metallic line being installed, keep closely in touch with the fire warden in the area. The work is being done under the supervision of District Forest Ranger H.A. Williams of Oneonta." (Catskill Mountain News)
