April 7, 1958: "Unconfirmed reports of bear tracks and bears being seen in Hocking County in recent years became a reality over the weekend at Ash Cave, where a big blacl bear found himself the center of attraction.
The caves area was once thought of as 'bear country.' Early settlers made their homes in that region because of the abundance of bears for fur and meat.
Mrs. Sylvia Akers, who lives at Old Man's Cave, first spotted the bear Thursday while on duty at the Ash Cave fire tower.
She didn't report seeing it at the time, but when she saw it again Saturday she notified the parks manager and county game protector. The bear was about a quarter mile from where she first saw it." (The Logan Daily News)

October 15, 1974: "Ash Cave Fire Tower serves as a lookout tower for forest fires during the fire seasons of spring and fall.
A grid system involving the Sugar Grove tower in Fairfield County, Tar Hollow tower in Ross County and Adkinson Ridge tower in Vinton County enables local fire fighters to pinpoint the locations of smoke and fires sighted in the area.
The fire tower is operated by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forests and Preserves, and has been a familiar sight in the community for over a half century." (The Logan Daily News)
