December 3, 1942: "The forest fire lookout tower at Elberon is now being occupied by soldiers from a coast artillery regiment for the purpose of accurately spotting and reporting all aircraft movements. Arrangements have been made between these soldiers and the Virginia Forest Service whereby they will report all fires to the fire protective organization in Surry County.
Owing to the present shortage of manpower it was impossible to find a towerman this season and the soldiers, under Corporal Mahoney, have volunteered to assist in the detection of forest fires." (Smithfield Times)
