November 10, 1933: "During the summer a valuable addition was made to the forest protection facilities of Maryland in the erection of a 120 foot galvanized steel lookout tower at Great Mills, St. Mary's county. State Forester Besley stated that this structure should enable an improvement in the fire record for southern St. Mary's county where there are located some of the most valuable pine forests on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay." November 18, 1933: "The tallest fire tower west of Chesapeake Bay, in Maryland, has just been completed on a hilltop at Great Mills, St. Marys County. This tower, which is constructed of steel throughout, is 120 feet high and overlooks the St. Marys River." (Evening Star)
