MARYLAND LOOKOUTS
BITTINGER (MEADOW MOUNTAIN)
Garrett County
1915: "Maryland's first tower detection was provided by a 60-foot tower erected in 1915, near Bittinger, on Meadow Mountain, in Garrett County." (Report of the State Department of Forestry, FY 1930)
1918-19: "The lookout tower on Meadow Mountain continues to give efficient service, as evidenced by the observer's daily report cards." (State Board of Forestry Report for 1918 and 1919)
1930: "The establishment of the State Forest purchase areas on Savage River, Garrett County, and the location of a forest guard on the new public forest area, made it imperative that telephone connection be provided between the guard's station and the Bittinger Forest Fire Tower, in order that fires originating on of near the area could be reported promptly. This was accomplished earl in March through the construction of a four-mile telephone line extension from the foot of Meadow Mountain along the Dry Run Road to the Dry Run schoolhouse, and thence through the woods down Horse Hollow to the guard station at Bond on Savage River. This is an important link in the protection facilities for Garrett County." (Report of the State department of Forestry, FY 1930)
