POMEROY LAKE
Ottawa National Forest
August 23, 1962: "The erection of a 100 foot steel lookout tower on the Bessemer Ranger District was recently completed, according to John O. Wernham, Forest Supervisor of the Ottawa National Forest.
The tower, which is a valuable link in the Forest's fire detection system, is located approximately 1/2 mile northwest of Pomeroy Lake. It will afford fire detection coverage over extensive pine plantations in that area.
The tower is a surplus tower from the Superior National Forest in Minnesota. It was dismantled, transported and reconstructed by the Four Star Construction Company of Foxboro, Wisconsin, under a Forest Service contract issued by the Superior National Forest. New footings for the tower were constructed by Ottawa National Forest crews earlier this summer.
Mr. LaFon C. Lyons of Bessemer will serve as the lookout when the fire danger is high enough to require the to be manned." (The Bessemer Herald)
1963: "Erection of a lookout tower near Pomeroy Lake was completed early in the fiscal year. This tower was added to improve fire detection coverage of the dense coniferous timber stands in that area." (Ottawa National Forest Progress Report)
