SOUTH CAROLINA LOOKOUTS
COOPER
Williamsburg County
South Carolina Forestry Commission
South Carolina Forestry Commission
April 27, 1929: "The state forestry commission at its meeting today authorized the purchase and construction of a forest fire lookout station to be erected on the lands of the Cooper River Timber company of Charleston.
This will be the first forest fire tower erected in the state and will mark the beginning of a state-wide forest fire protection plan that will be developed by the commission as rapidly as conditions permit, according to Lewis E. Staley, state forester. The station will be connected by telephone with the headquarters of a caretaker of the company, so that should a fire start anywhere visable from the tower, men to fight it can be quickly secured.
The tower will be constructed and maintained under the state forestry commission's cooperative forest fire protection plan with timberland owners throughout the state." (The Index-Journal)
