August 13, 1936: "Funds also will make possible the construction of a new bridle trail to the summit of Standing Indian bald from the foot of the mountain at Deep Gap. The peak, 5,500 feet in elevation, is the highest in Macon County. A new stone observation tower will be erected at the summit of Standing Indian, which commands one of the finest views in the Nantahala mountains." (The Cherokee Scout)
