March 8, 1946: "Because of the unusually dry and windy weather which is creating a fire hazard for forested areas of Nicholas and Clay Counties, Ted Hughes, local towerman, has been notified to begin his work at Lone Star Fire Tower today. This is two weeks ahead of the usual schedule for towermen who ordinarily begin their vigil on the first day of fire season, March 20. The announcement that Hughes will go on duty fourteen days ahead of regular schedule came from Fred Hanna, county forest protector, stationed at Clay. Hanna is in charge of forest fire protection in the western section of Nicolas County as well as Clay County." (Beckley Post-Herald)
