April 4, 1946: "A woman forest fire lookout in Rhode Island took a long view and located a blaze in New York State. Spotting smoke far to the southwest, Mrs. Hannah Whaley checked with Watch Hill Coast Guard station and found that the forest fire was on Orient Point, Long Island, N.Y.--40 miles from the Shannock Forest Tower." (The Bee - Danville, Virginia)
1954-55: "It is recommended that funds be made available for two new fire tower cabs and for raising one of these towers, 20 feet. Both Woonsocket Hill and Shannock cabs have deteriorated over the past years to such an extent that they are have become unsafe for observers. Moreover, the trees around Shannock have grown to a height where they are obstructing the Observer's view." (20th Annual Report of the Department of Agriculture and Conservation)
