KENTUCKY LOOKOUTS
LUCINDA (KNOB)
Leslie County
June 13, 1927: "Work on the Forestry lookout station on Lucinda Knob, at the head of Big Creek, in the Red Bird section of Clay county, is going forward rapidly, according to W.E. Jackson, assistant state forester, who was in Pineville en route to Frankfort after an inspection trip over the wooded area now under state fire protection.
Mr. Jackson said that the station which will cover the Red Bird section was to have been built of steel, as those in other places, but that investigation showed that the cost of transporting the materials to the site was prohibitive and that wood then was decided upon. Materials had to be hauled many miles after reaching the end of the railroad line.
Hundreds of acres of timber lands are being added to the protective associations throughout this section, Mr. Jackson said. While in Pineville Mr. Jackson said that the Forestry Department would co-operate with the State Park Commission in transplanting trees in the Cumberland State Park here and that his organization would give the wooded areas protection from forest fires."
