RARICK HILL
Pennsylvania - Tioga County - State
October 5, 1922: "The State Department of Forestry is erecting a fire tower on Rarick hill, Upper Lambs Creek, in rear of the reservoir of the Mansfield Water Company and near the monument which has been there for a number of years." (Wellsboro Gazette)
December 21, 1922: "The new forest fire tower at Tioga, near Lambs Creek, commands a splendid view of the surrounding country for many miles. Mansfield is plainly visible, also Mount Pisgah, and many other landmarks. The tower will stand at an elevation of 2284 feet above sea level." (Wellsboro Gazette)
April 25, 1923: "The State Forestry department expect to start work soon on erecting the new Rarick fire tower near Lambscreek. From this point is one of the finest views in the county. If Richmond township will fix the road to the Rarick tower so that it is in passable condition, this site will be an attraction for pleasure seekers." (The Wellsboro Agitator)
November 28, 1923: "The other morning the towerman on duty at Rarick Fire Tower, Tioga District, ascended the tower and on reaching the last landing before entering the observation top he saw a large porcupine seated there partaking of a few splinters of the wood platform while enjoying the view some 50 feet from the ground.
As no club was available and the idea of turning his back on Mr. Porky was not to be thought of, the towerman decided to climb up on the railing of the narrow stair and allow the visitor plenty of room.
On doing this the action apparently scared the animal, who rolled up in a ball and started down, rolling. He landed on the ground, lay there a few moments and ambled off apparently as healthy and hearty as ever.
The towerman feels sure this was not the same porky who ate the dynomite a short time ago, because he would have exploded when he hit the ground, from a fifty-foot fall." (The Agiator)
May 27, 1925: "Another kind of fire was observed by Towerman John Badman, on Rarick tower Wednesday. Seeing a fire start at the home of D.M. Clemons at Crooked Creek, R.D., he called Clemons' house, ringing and ringing, but no one was at home. Badman's effort was in vain and the neighbors had great difficulty in saving the barn. The house burned to the ground." (The Wellsboro Agitator)
April 14, 1949: "The Department has five fire towers in Tioga County. The names of the towerman and locations are as follows: Frank Starkey on the Rarick tower at the head of Lambs Creek." (Wellsboro Gazette)
