LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN
Potter County
1917: A bare site without structures in the Austin Forest: (Summary of Patrol Service, 1917)
April 22, 1920: "Recently a forest fire, burning near Keating Summit, Potter county, was discovered from the Lookout Mountain tower, more than twenty-five miles away. Harold F. Port, of Cross Fork, the forester in charge of the Ole Bull State Forest, has reported to the Pennsylvania Department of Forestry that Ranger Olson located the fire with the aid of a pair of binoculars.
Gifford Pinchot, the states new chief forester, points to this instance as an illustration of the necessity of having many more similar towers for fire protection purposes on State forests." (The Potter Enterprise)
