MAXTON

June 10, 1936: "Drummond island is to have a new fire tower.
The structure, which is of the 100-foot stairway ladder type, is being erected with the help of CCC crews near Maxton about five miles north of the present Drummond island tower. This will give Drummond island two firetowers, which are sufficient to command complete visibility over the fire-hazard area of the island." (Pinconning Journal and Bay County News)

September 4, 1937: "Drummond Island claims the youngest 'high climber' in Michigan. He is Gayle Haken of Drummond, who climbed the 100-foot Maxton fire tower unassisted. Gayle is not quite two and one-half years old. Previously Dickie McNeil, four, of Escanaba, was the youngest known fire-tower climber in the state." (The Ironwood Times)
