September 7, 1939: "The State Conservation Department has directed immediate construction of a watch tower near Coopers Plains. The tower will be of steel construction 86 feet in height on a hill more than 1,800 feet high. It will be used by wardens of the Conservation Department in watching to guard against forest fires. From the tower it is claimed a view will be possible in a radius of 25 miles. Atop the tower will be an enclosed look-out.
The tower will be constructed by members of the CCC camp at Monterey and its base will require more than 40 tons of concrete. It is expected that construction will begin soon and the work completed within two months. The tower was located within the past week." (Star-Gazette)

Forest Ranger Robert Roche of Painted Post reports CCC enrollees will build the 86-foot steel tower this Fall. The 1,800-foot hill will provide an observation field of about 25 miles." (The Daily Messinger)
