May 1, 1936: "Michigan will have eight new fire towers to locate this summer and fall and as soon as the present visibility survey is completed the first of the new towers will be erected.
The Fisk Knob tower which is to go up near Kent City and in northern Kent county will not have to wait until the visibility studies are finished and may be raised during May, Conservation authorities here assert.
By the visibility survey fire prevention authorities here expect to uncover and 'blind' spots in the fire zone that are not reached by the present fire tower arrangement.
By relocating some of the 140 towers now standing and erection of new towers it is expected that 100 percent coverage can be obtained by Michigan's fire force over nearly 20,000,000 acres of northern forest country." (Oxford Leader)

May 23, 1939: "A record for forest fire location at a distance was established here recently when Phil Husband, towerman at Big Rapids, picked up the smoke of a fire in Walker township at a distance of 44 miles.
Husband was able to locate the distant blaze on the right section. A cross shot was made by Volney Thompson, towerman at the Fisk Knob fire tower, and established the definite location of the blaze as section 15, town 7, range 12, Walker township.
Thompson relayed the alarm to Walker township fire fighters who immediately went into action. A large crew of men worked for hours before bringing the flames under control. Many acres were devastated and the blaze was said to have been one of the most destructive fires in that area for the past 10 years." (The Escanaba Daily Press)
