October 21, 1964: "Cherokee County now has a full-time towerman for the lookout tower at Daniels Gap atop Lookout Mountain.
James C. Edlers began working at the tower Oct. 1 at what is sometimes a lonely -- but always important -- job, that of protecting the forests of the county.
Elders climbs the long flight of stairs at the tower each day at 8 a.m., and watches for signs of fire until 5 p.m.
He is also radio operator for the Division of Forestry, Game and Fish and Water Safety Division.
The Cherokee County fire tower at Daniels Gap was built in 1961, equipped with telephone and radio. It is located on one of the highest points on Lookout Mountain and is easily accessible by car." (Anniston Star)
