CROTCHED MOUNTAIN
New Hampshire - Hillsborough County - New Hampshire Forestry Commission
1915-1916 biennium: A new lookout station was constructed. (State of New Hampshire: Biennial Report of the Forestry Commission for the years 1915-1916)
1921: "Owing to the dry conditions during 1921 there were 29 lookout stations maintained for the whole or greater part of the fire season. This included the Crotchet station in Francestown, which was an emergency station.." (Biennial Report of the Forestry Commission, 1921-22)
1922: "In 1922 five of the 29 stations were either temporarily or permanently discontinued because it was believed that the service from them did not justify the expense of their maintenance, except in emergency." This was one of the affected stations. (Biennial Report of the Forestry Commission, 1921-22)
1925: "A new 45-foot steel lookout tower on Crotched Mountain replaces the one abandoned in 1921." (The Peterborough Transcript)
January 3, 1930: "Crotched Mountain station was opened in 1915 with an open top town of wood, 20 feet high, and a small cabin. In 1921 it was abandoned, but was reopened this year, when a 45-foot steel tower and a two room cabin were built. Materials were conveyed to the mountain-top by means of a caterpillar tractor.
In refitting this station much aid was given by Sidney W. Winslow of Brookline, Mass., who is a large property owner in Francestown." (Portsmouth Herald)
