April 3, 1942: "Four aircraft spotting stations are now functioning in the county. One being located at the fire tower at Wetappo. These stations are now reporting daily to the district control center at Thomasville, Ga." (The Star)
May 7, 1950: "Fire protection methods and equipment were demonstrated to the Port St. Joe 4-H club boys at Wetappo fire tower here recently, according to Agent C.R. Laird.
Two of the boys were so interested they made a colored forest land ownership map of Gulf county for the county agent's office." (Panama City News Herald)
