September 29, 1933: "Among improvements will be the building of roads and trails throughout the park area, the removal of fire hazards and the planting of trees. It is likely that a lookout tower will be built on top of Pine Mountain and that a road will be built to it. Picnic and camp grounds will be built similar to those in Indiana and in some of the national parks, it was said." (Middlesboro Daily News)
June 4, 1937: "We had to content ourselves with the main drive along the two-lane paved road leading to the rest of Pine Mountain, and over the newly constructed grade to the first Lookout Tower, where a thrilling vista of mountain ranges in every direction can be seen; where you can pick out the broken back of the Eastern Cumberland Range at historic Cumberland Gap; where you can look over into the narrow and isolated Greenbrier district; where you can witness a panorama of majestic beauty unequaled anywhere, even in the Great Smokies."
