WELLSTON
Manistee County - Lower Michigan National Forest
November 15, 1923: "Under direction of Arthur Austin of Wolverine, Mich., in charge of tower construction for the state department of conservation, erection of Manistee county's new forest fire protection tower has been commenced.
The site is a half mile north of the village of Wellston in the pine slashings. It is said to be the highest point in Manistee county, affording a view of many miles in all directions, and on a clear day even the city of Manistee is plainly visible, although it is about 20 miles away.
The site was selected by District Game, Fish and Fire Warden Mark Craw." (The Herald-Press)
