EAST RIVER MOUNTAIN
Tazewell County
October 7, 1967: "Vandals have again damaged the fire tower on East River Mountain in Tazewell County, Va., south of Springville, Chief Fire Warden Charlie W. Dunford said.
The tower has been vandalized periodically while other observation towers in the county remain virtually unharmed. Recent damages to the East River tower exceed, $100, Dunford said.
He said glasses were broken from windows, a door was smashed and a mattress slashed. He said the damage occurred sometime between Sunday afternoon and noon Wednesday.
Dunford said the towers are checked periodically, but are manned only during several weeks of the fire season each spring and fall." (Bluefield Daily Telegraph)

October 19, 1969: "C. W. Dunford, Tazewell County's chief forest warden, said Saturday that vandals have caused extensive damage to the Forestry Department's fire tower on East River Mountain.
The cabin located at the base of the tower has been the object of repeated instances of destruction, and at least one arson attempt.
Dunford urged any citizens who may be sight-seeing in the area of the tower to report the presence of any suspicious persons in the vicinity. Dunford said he suspects juveniles are at the root of the vandalism, although he has no concrete proof to sustain his suspicions." (Bluefield Daily Telegraph)
