NEW YORK LOOKOUTS
JERSEY HILL (WEST ALMOND)
Allegany County
April 6, 1935: "An 80-foot steel fire observation tower, furnished by the federal government, has been erected in the town of West Almond, Allegany County by CCC workers.
An observer will soon be stationed there to watch for fires within an area of twenty miles. He will be under the direction of District Ranger Robert L. Witherell of Olean in charge of Allegany, Stueben and Cattaraugus counties. A cabin for the observer's use will be erected by April 15.
The increased facilities for early detection of forest fires made possible by the new tower are expected to reduce the annual fire loss from Spring blazes over the area observed. The state owns 15,000 acres of abandoned farm land in the vicinity of the tower which it has purchased in recent years and much of it is being set to trees in a reforestation program."
