August 17, 1930: "A forest fire in Mason county was seen by Fred F. Ensign, Cedar, Mich., from a fire tower 61 miles away.
Ensign is towerman in the Leelanau tower near Maple City. From his lofty perch he saw a fire in Mason county west of Ludington and was able to 'sight a line' to assist fire fighters in locating the flames." (Ludington Daily News)

March 25, 1948: "The Maple City fire tower is manned during all fire weather. From this point fires can be spotted in almost every spot on the county." (Leelanau County Times)

Burning permits, now required, may be secured by calling the tower, Conservation Officer Leon Cluff at Maple City, the district conservation officer at Traverse City, or any key man."
