STRATHAM HILL
New Hampshire - Rockingham County
June 2, 1932: "The fire tower at Stratham Hill is of great benefit to this territory, as the fire warden stationed there locates fires in woodland, or grass fires, within a few minutes of their Inception and immediately telephones the fire station. In some cases, hours would elapse before the fire would be discovered by a chance passer-by in little frequented sections and it might then be to late to save valuable property from destruction. With the aid of the fire warden, the efficient local fire department is on the scene of a blaze before it has had time to grow to invincible proportions." (The Portsmouth Herald)
March 26, 1946: "Herman Wilbur, Stratham hill fire warden, has reopened the fire tower there. He has taken care of the tower for the past six years." (The Portsmouth Herald)
December 1, 1973: "Selectmen met with state forestry officials the Stratham Hill Park fire watch tower, cabin and garage located there.
Use of the structures, owned by the state, has been phased out of service due to the recent retirement of Clayton Eastman who manned the facility for the past 16 years.
The officials agreed to consult with the state's attorney general for wording of an article to appear in the 1974 town warrant which will allow the town to operate the facility. The tower has been a tourist attraction in the area.
Upon his retirement from the forestry service, Eastman was appointed to serve as park ranger and will supervise activities there." (The Portsmouth Herald)
February 19, 1977: "The Stratham Community Church will hold a memorial service for Clayton H. Eastman, who died Feb. 14, as part of its regular worship service Sunday, Feb. 20, at 10 a.m.
Friends of Eastman, who manned the fire watch tower at Stratham Hill for 15 years, are invited to attend.
The Rev. William McInnes will preside." (The Portsmouth Herald)
