July 18, 1940: "This afternoon Tuscaloosa County will witness an event which signalizes the fact that something is really being done about keeping down the forest fires in this county. Posterity will record the date, July 18, 1940, as the official start of a conservation program that will save this county thousands of acres of woodland in time to come.
Appropriate ceremonies will mark the dedication of the fire tower near Buhl this afternoon at 4:o'clock. Dr. Walter B. Jones will head a group of Conservation Department officials.
The tower near Buhl is just a start. Two other towers are planned at strategic points in the county at Windham Springs and Searles. All will be linked by telephone connection." (The Tuscaloosa News)
