ATTEAN MOUNTAIN

September 4, 1905: "The second observatory is located on top of Attean Mountain in the upper Moose river valley and the chief fire warden for that district is Mr. Sullivan Newton of Jackman. Mr. Newton's observer has warned the main office of several blazes which Mr. Newton has been able to overcome very speedily and has saved the land owners large sums of money. (Daily Kennebec Journal)
December 1905: "Some of the wild land owners who have heartily co-operated with the State Forestry Department have been instrumental this year in establishing three lookout telephone stations--one on the summit of Squaw Mountain, one on Mount Attean and one on Bigelow Mountain. These stations, with the aid of powerful glasses, have covered a wide range of vision, and the watchmen have thus been enabled to overlook a vast stretch of territory." (Forest Leaves)
August 1907: "The Attean Mountain station is on the south shore of Moose River, about 20 miles west of Jackson. The operator has an outlook over 200,000 acres of green timber country. Twelve fires were reported from this point." (1905) (Forest Leaves)
1910: "Camp kits have been procured for the watchmen on Attean Mountain and two patrolmen along the line of the railroad. The telephone line from Jackman to the top of Attean Mt. has been put in first-class condition." (1910 Forest Commissioner's Report)
1914: "A new lookout station was built on Attean Mt and one and one-fourth miles of telephone to connect same, a new box for same." (1914 Forest Commissioner's Report)
1916: "The Attean Mountain tower has been lined with matching boards and painted on the outside. The trail was kept in good condition as also the telephone line." (1916 Forest Commissioner's Report)
1920: "Attean Mt. Lookout station in Somerset County was the first station to open, this station being opened on May 7th." (Forest Commissioner's Annual Report, 1920)
1920: Inventory shows a 12-foot wood tower.
