BEAR CREEK
Emmet County
1949-50: "The Federal Communications Commission refused to approve the erection of a higher antenna tower at Boyne City so it was decided to move that station to the Bear Creek fire tower location south of Petoskey." (Fifteenth Biennial Report, The Department of Conservation)
January 7, 1956: "The Washington bureau of the Grand Rapids Press reported Friday that a 'small unmanned radar station to be built near Peroskey in Northern Michigan' by the Air Force.
The United Press reported earlier this week from Peroskey that it was rumored an automatic gap filler radar unit would be built near the Bear Creek fire tower just outside Peroskey. The United Press story said bids were being advertised to build the unit.
The Press story said an Air Force spokesman confirmed that Westinghouse Electric Corp. is advertising for bids for the project which will cost between $50,000 and $60,000 and cover about an acre.
The station will be part of the SAGE system which detects aircraft and relays the information to a filter center where direction, speed and altitude are computed, the Press said.
A radar station at Empire in Leelanau County, which is manned by Air Force personnel, is part of the network and it is presumed information about aircraft detected by the Perosky station would be relayed to the interceptor jet base scheduled to be built near Kalkaska in the event the planes were believed to be enemy aircraft."
