CUSTER (KINTNER)
Mason County - Manistee National Forest
June 11, 1942: "Mason county's highest building is a new 90-foot State Forestry Department fire tower being constructed on the Dewey Kintner farm south of Custer. Named the Kintner tower, the structure is located on the highest point in the county and will command a view of the country for 30 miles around on a clear day.
Robert Hunt, of Allegan, will man the tower. He is to be in his place for 10 hours a day over a seven-day week. Only equipment in the tower with him will be his short wave radio telephone, field glasses, and his technical tools for locating the fire. He will work in conjunction with the United States Forest Reserves towers at Crystal Valley and in the Ward hills in locating the fires." (Ludington Daily News)
