GYPSY LAKE
Alger County - Michigan Department of Conservation
May 29, 1937: " 'Who's that knocking at my door?' asked Towerman Douglas Mulligan, sitting high in his lofty perch atop the Gypsy Lake tower, south of Grand Marias, last week.
There was no answer to his inquiry, only the steady scratch, scratch, and gnawing sound, like someone trying to get in the trap door on the floor of the tower cab.
'Okay, I'll open up, if quit fooling around down there.' said Mulligan as he swung open the trap door to find a good sized porcupine staring him in the face.
The porky had climbed up the hundred feet of stairway on the Gypsy Lake tower to get a meal from the trap-door in the floor." (Ironwood Daily Globe)
