BENNDALE
George County - Mississippi Forest Service
September 17, 1929: "A new tower is to be erected at Bendale, George county, the material for it having been shipped last week and the tower will be placed within two weeks, Mr. Kimball said." (Sun Herald)
October 10, 1929: "During the week ending Sept., 30, the Mississippi Forest Service completed a new 100-ft., lookout tower two and one-half miles west of Bendale. This is the fifth tower built by the Mississippi Forest Service during the last two years and makes six towers which will be in operation during the coming fire season.
This tower is of galvanized steel and was manufactured by the Bessemer Galvanizing Works, Inc., and is known as the ladder type. The erection was under the supervision of the District Forester and occupied the time of a five-man crew four four and one-half days. This is considered very rapid and efficient work and is an example of the manner in which the organization of the Mississippi Forest Service is performing its duties.
The view from this tower is one of the most extended of any of the six towers erected. The valleys of Pascagoula River, Red and Black creeks lie within the protective radius of this tower and smoke from the manufacturing plants of Lucedale, Moss Point, Wiggins, Maxie and Hattiesburg are plainly visible on clear days. This tower will be connected by telephone lines with the other towers in the Pascagoula Area and with the wardens, rangers and smoke-chasers of this protective organization. K. E. Kimball, District Forester." (Stone County Enterprise)
