November 23, 1922: "The Pisgah National Forest, who contemplates lookouts for the protection of their areas in the near future.
One of these, likely a steel tower with an enclosed lookout room high above the ground, is planned for Big Chestnut Knob, between Caldwell and Burke Counties. Sitting with his eyes taking in the entire compass of the surrounding forests and mountain peaks, the lookout will will also have before him on a table a specially prepared map with the aid of which it will be possible to locate forest fires rapidly when once they have been sighted from the tower." December 31, 1922: "Likelihood of building a lookout tower on Big Chestnut Knob is foreseen, as this point in the Boone overlooks practically the entire area, another is planned on Pilot in the Pisgah area. The latter, however, will likely wait until the Chestnut Knob project is completed, as there is already a temporary lookout station built on Pilot." (Ashville Citizen-Times)
