1939-40: "All fire towers, tower buildings and telephone line construction was done by the Civilian Conservation Corps at no cost to the State or protective associations. July 7, 1940: "M.L. Wilkes of Hartsville has been appointed towerman of the Hartsville fire tower. He will reside on the tower grounds and be on duty at all times. Mr. Wilkes will move into the new residence on the grounds the later part of July." (Florence Morning News)
December 19, 1946: "A forest fire danger station has been set up at the Hartsville fire tower. The station consists of an anemometer, which will measure the wind velocity, rain gauge, and fuel moisture sticks.
Darlington county landowners are being asked to call Hartsville fire tower or the Darlington county forest fire ranger, Alton Yarborough before burning debris.
Persons who are interested in seeing the operation of the forest fire weather station are asked to visit Mrs. W.B. Steen at the Hartsville tower." (Florence Morning News)
March 15, 1951: "A change in forest tower personnel at Hartsville was announced Monday at the office at Darlington county forest ranger, Alton Yarborough.
James Neil Stokes, who has served as the towerman in the Hartsville area for the past several months, has resigned.
Mrs. Dolores T. Johnson has been named to take Stokes' place. She has assumed her new duties there." (Florence Morning News)
