June 11, 1948: "The forest observation tower, one half mile from Newport on the Nine Foot road, is now known as the Simmons tower. In special services recently the tower dedicated to the memory of S/Sgt. Furnifold M. Simmons, of Rheims, N.C.
Sergeant Simmons, who was a crew chief of a B-24, was killed in an air crash near Peterson field, Calif., on April 5, 1944. From August 1935 to February 1943 Sergeant Simmons was in the Croatan National Forest service." (Carteret County News-Times)
