TIONESTA
Pennsylvania - Forest County
August 30, 1937: "The fourth annual picnic of the Tionesta Fire Tower crew was held Saturday at the fire tower, west of Tionesta. Due to unusually fine weather, the crowd was the largest it has ever been." (Titusville Herald)
April 17, 1947: "The Titusville Airport now has a contract with the State Department of Forests and Waters to investigate and report any clouds of smoke noticed by any pilots flying from the local port. They are to note the location and size of the fire and report to the field immediately, from where further investigation will be made and the facts turned in to the nearest supervisor for his disposition. One such fire was reported last Sunday--it was set by a farmer cleaning off an old field and was under control. A report was made to Supervisor William R. Field at Pleasantville, who said the towerman at the Tionesta tower had also discovered the column of smoke, and was about to send out a crew to the scene to investigate. The call from the airport made the trip unnecessary." (Titusville Herald)
June 14, 1968: "A big bear gave four Pennsylvania Department of Forests and Waters employes two anxious hours Thursday afternoon.
A.D. Wood of Cooperstown and Andy Marfink and Ray Cortwright were painting the Tionesta Fire Tower, located just off the Neiltown-Tionesta road, while Mabel Anderson, of Stewart Run, was 'directing' the paint job from the ground.
About 1 p.m. Mrs. Anderson said she 'turned around and there stood this black bear' less than 40 feet from her.
Mrs. Anderson ran into the fire warden's dwelling nearby and locked the door.
The men on the tower continued painting and studying the bear.
First it knocked over a garbage can and finding something to eat, took a late lunch. Then the animal decided it needed a snooze. It reclined near the building in which Mrs. Anderson had sought safety.
The bear got up, nosed around a bit more and then picked another spot to sleep. It was in no hurry to leave.
Meanwhile Mrs. Anderson called several people in Tionesta offering them an opportunity 'to get some good pictures.'
This reporter was in Tionesta observing a stocking of big trout in new nursery pools in Tubbs Run and about 2:30 was informed 'there might be a good bear picture' at the Tionesta Fire Tower.
This was the first time any of the fire-fighting crew had seen a bear near the tower, although the garbage can had been ransacked previously, Mrs. Anderson said." (The News-Herald)
