MICHIGAN LOOKOUTS
MOSS LAKE
Hiawatha National Forest
May 12, 1940: "A new fire tower of an experimental type situated near Moss lake in the Hiawatha National Forest is nearing completion and will be put into service this month, W.J. Brown of the Rapid River district office announced yesterday.
The tower is the same height as the others, 100 feet, but the lookout's living quarters are built into its loft and are 14 x 14 feet in dimension. This is exactly double the space normally used and enables the lookout to be at his post constantly, an important advantage. In most towers the lookout's living quarters usually consist of a cabin adjacent to the tower proper.
The new tower because of its proximity to the camp will probably have three lookouts selected from CCC enrollees at Camp Mormon Creek although fire watchers are ordinarily hired by the month during the season when fire hazard is great. When the possibility of fire in the district is less great only two men are used." (Escanaba Daily Press)
