HARDWOOD MOUNTAIN
Somerset County - Maine Forestry District
November 1, 1916: "The department has just received a picture of the big lookout tower built this year on Hardwood mountain in Township 9, R18, Somerset county. It is a substantial looking affair and has the honor of being constructed of material found on the spot, thus making the expense comparatively light. The timber is all peeled and the tower should last many years. It has been in charge of Chief Warden W. F. Hinckley of Bangor." (Daily Kennebec Journal)
1916: "W.H. Hinckley, Head Waters of St. John River, Northern Somerset County--I have built a new lookout station on Hardwood Mt., Twp. 9, R. 18, which is a great help to the territory." (1916 Forest Commissioner's Report)
1920: Inventory shows a 60-foot steel tower.
