November 1935: The Civilian Conservation Corps erected a 99-foot 9-inch steel tower costing $1,423.80. The funding was through the Emergency Conservation Works program. (Department of Conservation and Development - 6th Biennial Report 1934-36)
July 28, 1939: [CCC] "31' x 25', 4-room frame house at Newkirk tower in Sampson County; completed July 28, 1939 by Camp P-68." (Department of Conservation and Development - 8th Biennial Report - 1940)
March 22, 2018: Auction was opened for bid on the surplus state property. The tower is located on State property, however, a reversion clause in the deed requires the tower be removed when no longer used for its original function. (mcstatesurplus.com)
