Pennsylvania - Franklin//Fulton County - Buchanan State Forest
June 21, 1921: "Two of the fifty steel fire towers that will be erected by the Pennsylvania Department of Forestry this summer probably will be placed in the Buchanan State Forest which is supervised by District Forester Byers, of Everrett. It is proposed to put one of the towers on the summit of the Tuscarora mountains, at an elevation of 2,440 feet above sea level. From this point, a forest fire observer will be able to detect fires as far as Shirleysburg to the north, the South mountains to the east. The hills of Maryland southward, and west to Sideling Hill mountain." (The Gazette - Bedford)
August 1921: "Maj. R.Y. Stuart, Deputy Commissioner of Forestry, has announced that 25 sites have been definitely fixed for forest fore observation towers that will be erected by the Department of Forestry this summer. Orders for 50 towers have been placed with the manufacturers. One of the first 18 towers will be put up at Tuscarora, Franklin county." (Forest Leaves, Vol. 18)
September 1, 1921: "The long talked of steel tower built by the state is at last completed. About three miles north of the Camp Wohelo girls camp it stands on the top of Tuscarora mountain 2540 feet above sea level, a real lookout tower eighty feet from the ground. The ascent is made by winding steps and from the top is a most marvelous view overlooking about twenty mountains and four valleys in different directions." (People's Register)
