August 18, 1927: "The first and only fire tower assigned to Mason County by the state Conservation Department arrived at the Dunbar farm, a mile and a half north of Walhalla and is being erected. It will be known as the Dunbar tower." (Ludington Daily News) published 8/18/1977
September 16, 1927: "Mason county's 80-foot, modern fire tower has been erected and a crew is expected soon, says Frank Knowles, fire warden, to raise a telephone line to provide communication with Scottville central and other towers.
The tower is of the best and latest type and has been raised on the Dunbar farm, northeast of Walhalla.
Mason county tower is to be connected by telephone with towers in Lake, Newaygo and Mecosta counties. The state is building the telephone lines, Warden Knowles says.
Mr. Knowles recently received notification from the towerman in Lake county, who had detected a fire at King's canyon, south of Ludington and approximately 32 miles south of the tower." (Ludington Daily News)
February 28, 1928: "Jas. Goodman has received the appointment of towerman at the Dunbar tower. He will assume his duties in the early spring." (Ludington Daily News)
October 3, 1928: "After dinner the party motored to Dunlap (sp) fire tower near Tallman. The tower is 85 feet high and beautiful scenery can be seen as it stands on a high hill. Five lakes can be seen.
The towerman stated that Ludington can be seen on a clear day. Each visitor is asked to register his name at the tower." (Ludington Daily News)
April 21, 1933: "The Dunbar fire tower at Tallman was reopened Thursday under the direction of J. Goodman after having been closed during the winter.
With the opening of the tower comes the necessity of obtaining a permit from Mr. Goodman to start a fire out-of-doors. This, permit may be obtained simply by calling the tower and asking for it." (The Ludington Daily News)
