CLIFF
Marquette County
February 16, 1923: "The highest fire tower in northern Michigan will be erected at Summit this Spring by the Michigan state conservation department. With an elevation of nearly 1,800 feet above L'Anse bay, thousands of acres of some of the best timber lands remaining will be put under the watchful eye of the bureau, which is now using every effort to prevent fire destroying out greatest remaining wealth.
An 85-foot tower will be built on this high spot and will be in charge of a competent fire warden during the season when fires are liable to destroy the forests. His observations will be over the Huron, Pesheka, Sturgeon and Silver river timber districts.
Deputy H. J. Koepp of Marquette will supervise the erection of the tower." (The L'Anse Sentinel)
